The night after visiting Jupiter, Ian called his sister for their FaceTime chat and the evening ritual of tucking Poppy in. They talked about their day, then mother and daughter kissed the screens and said good night. Once Poppy was under the covers and cuddling her stuffed black cat, Mr. Darcy, Ian carried the iPad into the living room for a private conversation with Liz.

“I want to talk to you about something before we sign off.” He asked her about the piece she’d done on Marie Nova. “I know you worked on it a long time, and I wonder if anything interesting ended up on the cutting room floor.”

“The segment was under fifteen minutes, so it’s not as focused as I would have liked,” she said. She looked tired, and he was worried about her. “I’ve got tons of footage and notes I didn’t use. It would take you weeks to go through it all, but I can send you a link and password to the files I saved.”

“That would be fantastic.”

“And I’ll bet the aired piece can be found on YouTube.”

He’d never watched it, but it was probably time.

“One more thing.” She lowered her voice. “I didn’t want to say anything in front of Poppy in case it doesn’t happen, but it looks like I might be coming home soon.”

His shoulders sagged in relief. He’d seen the news about an increase in danger in Yemen. Some were even worried about another coup. He wanted her safe. “We’ll be here,” he said before they signed off.

Liz had been right about finding the documentary on YouTube. Watching it, he felt a familiar sense of pride in the job his sister had done. It wasn’t sensationalized or intrusive. The piece began with old footage of Marie Nova, most of it shot before she became famous. He’d been a fan, but just minutes in he could see why the whole world had been infatuated with her. She exuded life, and while Jupiter was quiet and pragmatic, he spotted similarities between mother and daughter, although it almost seemed Jupiter was going out of her way to avoid looking like Marie. He could understand that.

In some of the later footage, there were noticeable bruises on Nova’s arms. Some people bruised easily, and actors often got knocked around on set. If he recalled correctly, the show had involved the weekly requisite fight scene. It was impossible to know the cause of her injuries, but he’d mention it to Jupiter.

There was also news footage of the day the body had been found. It took him a moment to recognize himself and Jupiter framed in a scene, standing in the front yard. So young. Both of them had been just kids, really. Shortly after that clip, he’d left to search for the cat while she stayed with Christopher Crane.

He reached the credits and realized he’d managed to get through all fifteen minutes without passing out. He’d watch it again later, when he wasn’t feeling as much anxiety.
